ORDER AN ARTICLE SUMMARY NOW

The article highlights the plight of different racial groups who have been discriminated against in one way or the other on the basis of their skin pigmentation, language and even religious backgrounds. From the various cases presented, what comes out quite clearly is the fact that the issue of discrimination has become rampant following the inauguration of Donald Trump. Evidently, this predicament is characterized by a wave of hate speech and blatant snide remarks posited against the different racial groups. On the positive side, the article has created an opportunity for the emancipation of the masses on the issue of racial discrimination by providing a forum for victims to share their experiences to demonstrate that this problem has been awakened amidst a political environment in which stereotypes and prejudices are regaining dominance in the mainstream of society.

Effect on Intercultural Communication

This issue has a negative connotation as far as intercultural communication is involved. The patterns of communication between individuals from diverse backgrounds will continue to be strained because of the ethnocentric attitudes and prejudices directed towards specific categories of people.  Stereotyping arises from categorizing people whereby people make assumptions and preconceptions based on variables such as race and religion about others instead of viewing them as a unique group (Kawakami et al., p.34). It should be noted that such negative evaluations have a tendency to create problems during interactions since everyone is always concerned with self-image and reputation. Stereotypes are at the center of confrontations which adversely affect open and honest communication.

Values Challenged in the News Article

The problem addressed in article challenges three vital values; integrity, tolerance and accountability. The waiter who made the snide remarks towards Diana failed to take responsibility for his actions and did not even bother to comment on the issue. Similarly, upon further investigation, it was revealed that his integrity was also questionable because his report contradicted police findings. Furthermore, the society is being challenged on its level of tolerance. All the cases documented in the article present different aspects that are present in the society. As such, it goes without saying that upon realizing this, we should all strive to accommodate one another’s beliefs and attitudes to foster coherence and tolerance. However, it is clear that a larger percentage of the society is still living in a barbaric age whereby ignorance is the order of the day. The concept of multiculturalism advocates for the acceptance of myriad cultural traditions to enhance diversity. Regardless of this, this value seems to lacking amongst the civilians of California.

Recommendations to Remedy the Situation

Firstly, legal reforms ought to be enforced by the United States government.Strict laws that have dire consequences should be adopted to safeguard against discrimination. Having a fully-functional and effective legal framework will go a long way in protecting the rights of the minority groups (Solanke, p.43). Stern action should also be taken against all those who go around shamelessly spreading spiteful remarks against others to serve as a lesson to others who indulge in such practices.

Subsequently, promoting the concept of multiculturalism is fundamental in diminishing instances of discrimination. It is a high time that people become aware and tolerant of other peoples’ affiliations, beliefs, and traditions to root out stereotyping and prejudice. It is an undisputed fact that ethnic diversity is a multifaceted issue, but that should not deter society from fostering tolerance and acceptance of the diverse groups. Promotingethnic diversity is vital in achieving peace and democracy in any society.
