Childhood obesity is a medical condition that affects children and adolescents. Childhood obesity leads to health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Children with weight issues become targets of bullying which can lead to depression and self-esteem issues. Obesity is caused as a result of poor lifestyle choices which include little exercise and eating too many empty calories. Obesity can also be caused by genetic and hormonal factors. To prevent and combat obesity in children, the family is a very important role model. If a parent has a poor diet with little to no activity then the child will follow into those footsteps. Parents must encourage healthy eating and physical activity in order for their children to do the same. Parents are recommended to limit sugar-sweetened drinks, junk food, and eating out at fast food restaurants. They are encouraged to limit their children’s tv or computer time to less than 2 hours a day. It is recommended to eat meals together as a family and to adjust portion sized according to the child’s age.
