Donald vs. Trump: Review of a News Story

Question

As you select a news item, you should think about a theory that they can relate to it. Once you have selected both the news story and the theory, it is time to write the paper. It should include a brief summary of the news story, a brief overview of the theory with a definition of the two concepts, and an explanation of the connection the student sees between the theory and the news story. The only sources that are allowed for this assignment are the news story itself and the textbook. Both should be referenced properly in ASA format, both in the text of the paper and in a reference list.

Answer

Donald vs. Trump: Review of a News Story

The news article reviewed in this paper is titled “Ire for Trump as He Derides Muslim Parents” published in The New York Times on July 30, 2016. The article describes how Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump belittled Mr. Khizr Khan and his wife Mrs. Ghazala Khan, the parents of the late Captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim soldier who died while serving his country in Iraq in 2004. This attack came after Mr. Khan made a speech at the just-concluded Democratic National Convention where he, alongside his wife, went ahead to declare their stand against Trump and to dissuade Americans against voting for him (Haberman & Oppel Jr., 2016). Trump stated Mrs. Khan was ‘not allowed’ to speak or that she ‘was not allowed to have anything to say’. This perception by Mr. Trump may be closely be interpreted within the context of the Feminist Theory of sociology which analyzes the status of women and men in society and seeks to give a voice to women by eliminating all forms of discrimination against them (Urry, 2012). In particular, the aspect of this theory that relates precisely to this article is gender inequality. Women are viewed as distinctly different from men and sometimes they may be abused, oppressed or discriminated upon based on these differences.

Mr. Trump’s comments give the impression that Mrs. Khan had not spoken due to some traditional Islamic beliefs whereby women are regarded as submissive or inferior and, therefore, not expected to talk in public gatherings (Sylvester, 1994). This chauvinist view promotes the idea that women are supposed to be seen, not heard. Additionally, Trump’s suggestion that Mrs. Khan was not allowed to have anything to say further depicts gender inequality by laying bare the Republican presidential candidate’s belief that women are not allowed to hold and express opinions of their own, and that they should always submit to rather than contest a man’s opinion.
