Donors have caps on how much they can give to a campaign while spending is not capped. Also, candidates must raise more and more money in order to run and be competitive in modern American elections. In addition, the rules on campaign finance have changed recently. All of these factors have a direct impact on our elections and most importantly on our democracy. How have the right to free speech and the need to maintain elections that are corruption free come into conflict as Americans finance political campaigns? In your response:
Discuss arguments for and against that money corrupts politicians.
Discuss why political parties and interest groups are concerned about campaign finance regulations.
Provide an overall assessment of this issue. Is the right to free speech more important or is the need to maintain corruption free elections more important to our democracy and why?
