Answer

H1N1 Vaccine

One significant event that has left an impact on the healthcare industry is the H1N1 vaccine. This vaccine protects against swine flu (H1N1) that was a pandemic in 2009. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2014), there were approximately 60.8 million cases of the disease between 2009 and 2010. Additionally, nearly 274,000 people were admitted while around 12, 000 died from the disease in the US (CDC, 2014).  Therefore, the development of the H1N1 vaccine has played a significant role in reducing death rates as well as the financial burden associated with it.

The outbreak of the swine flu in 2009 was the most critical, and this prompted health agencies to act quickly on the issue. The World Health Organization was the major contributor for this vaccine. The organization developed a process of finding the vaccine within the shortest time possible. Thus, agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency accelerated their operations to ensure that the vaccine was available within four months (Carlsen & Glenton, 2016).  Therefore, the vaccine was distributed to various countries and persons who were at a high risk of contracting it like the health workers were advised to get vaccinated. Nevertheless, the vaccination rates were quite poor because most countries did not reach their targets as people were uncertain of its safety.

The issue of safety and effectiveness of the vaccine was ongoing in various regions. However, an evidence-based research indicated that the vaccine was not only effective but also safe for pregnant and lactating women (World Health Organization, 2014).

In conclusion, since the vaccine has been proven to be harmless by WHO, addressingall issues related to vaccine safety and risk is essential to overcome the challenges. Attending tothe safety concerns will encourage more people to get vaccinated. As people continue to get vaccinated, there will be fewer cases of swine flu infections. .
