Answer

Most Effective Teacher

In the recent age, teaching has significantly evolved from the normal mastery of concepts and knowledge of the subject matter to embracing of new technological way of instruction and information dissemination. The aim is to enhance the learning process to ensure that it helps learners to turn from being beginners into experts in their fields of specialization. The digital age comes with several technological distractions that challenge educators to embrace these change to be able to capture and retain the attention of the learners and ultimately turning them into better health educators themselves. This calls for a need for a framework to guide educators on device programs or syllabuses that will be consistent with the needs of the contemporary learner. This phenomenon calls to mind the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) – a set of learning program development principles that that provides equal learning opportunities to all students (Rose, & Meyer, 2002).

Personally, the best application of the Universal Design for Learning during my academic career was exemplified by my favorite dentistry college instructor, Dr. Conrad Whitaker. I found his lectures both very interactive and educative. First, Dr. Whitaker acknowledged the fact that in a diverse learning environment, there are learners with varying capabilities in terms of information perception and comprehension (Rose, & Meyer, 2002). . Therefore, in his lectures, he accommodated and incorporated varying ways of representing his topics, from visual, to audio, as well as print media to accommodate and include all varieties of learners. Our class consisted of fast learners, slow learners, and average students from all over the world, some of whom were not native English speakers.

Secondly, he devised several ways of tapping into the strong points of students in the class for maximum learning experience. This way, students who were once poor at verbal and written communication were able to articulate their thoughts in writing. He gave assignments that required written versions as well as presentations, and subsequently clustered the two contrasting abilities so that each could learn from the other while doing the assignments (CAST, 2011).

As an educator in the field of dental hygiene field, I will emulate my instructor by first identifying the learning abilities of my students. This will help in designing lesson plans that are all inclusive, individualized and educative. As observed by Bastable et al. (2010), the information that an educator disseminates during learning situations should be individualized to suit the needs of each learner, and this requires adequate assessment each student’s learning abilities and styles. Through this process, I will get to identify the learning needs of each learner and the materials I will require in the learning experience.

I will then design a learning approach that is appealing to all students and that I am comfortable with as well. I have in mind a style that make use of learning aid material that the learner is familiar and comfortable with which will help in the problem-solving Using specific learning activities based on the learners’ preferences, I will reinforce some of the already learned modalities. The best ways to determine which learning style to adopt is through observation, which entails engaging learners in interactive interviews where they express their preferences. This approach provides a basis for the gradual introduction of the instruments of a particular learning style as necessitated by learning progress.
