LEADERSHIP MOMENT 3

FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY: NO RESUBMISSIONS FOR A HIGHER
GRADE WILL BE ALLOWED FOR ANY REASON.
NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT PRIOR AUTHORIZATION. AND ANY
LATE SUBMISSIONS, IF ALLOWED BY INSTRUCTOR, WILL INCUR 10% GRADE
PENALTY FOR EACH LATE DAY.
Students will read the weekly assigned chapters in Northouse and choose an
example of a leadership theory or concept in action to illustrate/relate to the
concept (cite Northouse copiously throughout the paper, literally in almost every
sentence except the part where you are “setting the stage”). Choose your real
case scenarios from current news, scholarly or business articles, or from personal
experience. The purpose of this assignment is to integrate the theory and
concepts with “real world” examples. These papers will be shared in class so

that others may learn and benefit from this integration. Each paper should be at
least 2 to 3 double-spaced pages of content (or about 7-10 paragraphs) and
written in APA format using the APA referencing methodology. For this
assignment only: no cover page; no page break for References, no abstract, TOC,
etc. please.
Hint: in American writing, a paragraph has a unifying main idea and starts with
a topic sentence–which sums up the entire paragraph–and takes about 3-8
sentences, or approximately 100 words.
More Hints: Pease do not submit your first draft (also known as “brainstorm”).
Carefully edit and proofread your draft for professional (but not legalese!)
tone, organization, spelling, punctuation, and grammar before posting it for
academic and business audiences. Please refrain from writing in the second
person (“you” and “your”), from using jargon, from padding your papers with
repetition, redundancies, clichés, fluff, and from using the following
expressions: “nowadays”, “in this day and age,” “in the book it says,” “in
conclusion,” “I truly believe,” ”According to the author, he/she states” – to
name just a few. When in doubt, consult our Writing advisors at the Whitten
Center (Offices of Student Development) by promptly setting up a face-to-face
or online appointment with a tutor or a writing consultant).
Once finished editing, post your submission under the 2 appropriate links in
Moodle (Leadership Moment 1, 2, 3) before 6 pm on the day of the current
week’s class meeting.
You will be submitting all papers through Turnitin FIRST and getting your
individual reports within a couple of minutes. Please make sure that your
paper has less than 20% similarity. Take a screen shot of the Turnitin report
which shows your name, date, the title of the paper, and similarity. Paste this
screenshot at the beginning of your original file. Submit the Word file (with the
screen shot of your Turnintin report) to the second link in Moodle. No paper
will be accepted for grading without the Turnitin report.
You will find both links in each week of our class Moodle page. ONCE AGAIN,
YOU WILL BE SUBMITTING EACH OF THESE 3 WEEKLY APPLICATION PAPERS
TWICE
Required Outline for application papers:
DO NOT WRITE ANY INTRODUCTION: START YOUR PAPER WITH YOUR
STORY: What happened? Where? When?. DO NOT RETELL OR SUMMARIZE THE
CHAPTER IN NORTHOUSE – I WILL NEVER ASK YOU TO REGURGITATE WHAT
YOU HAVE READ IN THE BOOK!

Case Summary: A brief restatement of the case in summary form: What
happened? When? Where? – no longer than 200 words (This could also be a
summary of an article from a business publication: you are welcome to use an
article, a TV show, or a movie –if you cannot think of any real-case situation ). In
this section there should be absolutely NO references to Northouse.
Discussion: (Why did it happen? What is right? What is wrong?) IN THIS
SECTION YOU NEED TO CITE NORTHOUSE – A LOT! Name the major issues you
see in your case as they relate to leadership. This can be a statement of the
major problem(s) and or opportunities presented in the case.
Your paper should use the relevant terminology identified in the text
(Northouse) to show your understanding of the terms and their applications. If
you quote the text for any referencing to support your discussion, you must use
quotation marks and cite the page and author (in our text case, Northouse, 2013)
in each citation. If you cite other sources, you must reference them as well. Use
APA, not MLA!
Recommendations and Conclusions:
PLEASE DO NOT USE THE PHRASE “IN CONCLUSION”: GET STRAIGHT TO THE
POINT. (How could it have been different?) CONTINUE REFERRING TO
NORTHOUSE IN THIS SECTION. This is the opportunity you have to state what
you believe is the best set of actions or steps to be taken to correct the problem
or achieve a major opportunity to improvement indicated by the case such as
defining the following:
Where you believe the company should go from the current (last known)
situation defined for the case and why
What steps or process should be taken by management to remedy a clearly
defined problem, how and why
Who (by title and or function) in the company needs to take responsibility to
change a bad situation to an improved situation
What exactly needs to change, when should it change, how should it be changed
and why
