Introduction

When making career choices, it is essential to consider one`s personality, interest, skills, and values in line with one`s weaknesses and strengths. In the nursing career, there are several fields that one can opt to pursue. The profession is not limited to delivering services to health sectors; it is also a sub-branch of other professions like education. This essay contains responses to section one, two, and three of posts written by different nursing students based on their choice of nursing as a career.

Section 1

In section 1, the student is interested in pursuing Masters in Nursing in the field of Population-Based Care Coordination at Stevenson University. The choice of the university is based on the fact that most universities offer masters programs in nursing majorly in education or management. On the contrary, Stevenson University has gone out of their way to provide masters in Population-Based Care Coordination, a career that offers an option for broader choice for future career development. The information is indicated in the brochure stating that the institution has received a privilege of offering a “new concentration in Population-Based Care Coordination.”It is further noted that Population-Based Care Coordination provides more opportunities for a broader choice for future career and that it offers a chance to narrow down to the preferred path in nursing. This statement is in line with the view of Joyce Becker, Dean of Students who asserts that the program prepares students for the subsequent step in their profession (Stevenson University, 2014).

The student affirms that a Masters in Nursing Education is a necessary and valuable qualification. However, nursing students should undertake on-the-job training since they are always teaching their patients as well as precepting new nurses and even the patient care technicians.

Besides, according to the section, it is necessary and invaluable to have experienced nurses in the classroom for nursing school students. This is true given that not all nursing students end up working in health facilities dealing with patients. Some of the nurses who pursued masters in Nursing Education sector remain in the classroom educating student-nurses. Consequently, they need to train on the skills necessary in imparting knowledge on the nursing student rather than that of dealing with the patients. This is true based on the student`s interest given that the choice of nursing career was based on the fact that the student is aspiring to care for patients at an organic level. Hence, Population-Based Care Coordination will offer an opportunity to practice the required skills in the process of acquiring education and learning. This is given in the citation from Benner (2001) on page 176, in the form of an affirmation of the student’s opinion that it is imperative for nurses to continually strive to gain more knowledge in their field, whichever path they choose (Benner, 2001).

The student is interested in pursuing hospice nursing. This choice is based on the fact that as an oncology nurse, the student sees a great need for nursing in the hospice setting, either in a facility or home-hospice. Consequently, Population-Based Care-Coordination enhances the pursuit in hospice nursing and helps in equipping with the skills required in the preferred career choice. This information is from the website (http://www.stevenson.edu/online/academics/graduate-programs/nursing/) which further affirms the student`s desire to pursuethe field of Population-Based Care Coordination.

Section 2

In section two, the student is interested in becoming a Nurse Educator, a career course which requires a combination of clinical expertise. The information from (Black, 2008) gives the details of the objective of the career choice. The student states that the pros of being a Nurse Educator include being able to teach and influence future nurses, having fewer work hours, and qualifying for off duties during holidays and weekends. On the other hand, the cons include less nurse-patient interaction, less of a nurse role and more of an educator role, and having to do work outside the hospital. The student further states the responsibility of a nursing manager and nurse midwife as the illustrations focuses on the pros and con of the two duties.  From the reference indicated, the student`s choice of pursuing a career in nurse educator given the student`s interest is valid.

Section 3

The student`s choice to pursue a course in nurse practitioner is based on the fact that the career choice involves direct contact with the patient. This discipline requires one to be on call, a situation that puts pressure on the nurse. Thus, it needs proper planning of the day’s activities to avoid breaking down during the delivery of services. Besides, the working conditions also expose the nurse`s health to contagious infection. However, the fulfilment of patients’ needs is the most magnificent driving force in this sector. This rationale is properly presented based on the work description as per the nursing guide by Buppert (2008).

Other Thought-Provoking Questions

In line with the career choice, other concerns include how the students can handle their weaknesses and utilize their strengths as they pursue their nursing career. Also, how the career choice meets their expected returns. This questions will guide the students to make a decision that will keep them motivated during their delivery of service as and when they start practicing.

When most students are making career choices, they often concentrate on the services they will deliver, their interest, and the amount of time they will invest in their duty.However, the availability of a job opportunity after completing the required course should supersede any other consideration. This is because the student may train in the desired line of a profession but lack a chance to practice due to limited opportunities available in the job market. One of the instances experienced is a nursing student who graduated from one of the reputable universities, applied to several institutions for a job in the career line, but no avail. Finally, the student resorted to pursuing a degree in a career that most employers required. Though the student ultimately made the right choice that would offer job opportunity, the initial decision was costly and led to too much wasted time.
