What are Your Thoughts?

In Sapolsky’s book, a lot of attention is on the relationship between stress and the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, metabolism, genes, and reproduction. Human beings respond to stressful circumstances by the body emitting glucocorticoids and adrenaline hormones that have a tendency to increasing the rate of heartbeats and the level of energy. The experience of stress over an extended period triggers the emission of the hormones that may have a devastating impact on the health of the individual (Sapolsky, 2010). I realize that stress has been the cause of many diseases among people, especially among those who fail to manage it. One observation I have made is that stress suppresses the immune system, making the body prone to infectious diseases. It may also affect the reproductive system as well as increase the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.


 It is imperative that stress is managed using strategies that are believed to be effective.  Sapolsky identifies four main strategies for reducing stress, which include meditation, mindfulness, berry breathing and visualization. However, social connectedness is the most essential component in terms of efforts to reduce stress. Its role has been widely acknowledged in many countries. For example, in Japan, high life expectancyis attributed to the country’s advanced social support networks which facilitate and enhance happiness. Therefore, there is a need for further research on the evaluation of the effects of social connectedness on stress management compared to the strategies that Sapolsky identifies as the most effective. Studies also need to be undertaken to explain what happens in the body once a person interacts with others and how such social encounters trigger stress responses. Once this information is obtained, everybody will be able to work towards attaining the appropriate stress management strategy which will have positive impact in terms of the prevention of stress-related diseases.
