Each answer should be roughly a page long. An organization’s socialization process and culture can contribute to both corruption and official deviance. Although these terms, by definition and operation are different, their affects contribute to the public’s perception of a criminal justice organization, and perpetuate a toxic subculture that is often traced to an organizations values, norms, goals, formal and informal socialization process, as well as management and leadership practices. After reviewing the assignments, module notes, PowerPoint presentations, and articles in the Learning & Assessment Activities page, you will have a better understanding of how an organization’s socialization process, culture, practices, and goals can contribute to corruption and official deviance. For this discussion, address the following question: • Your job is to develop a program for training corrections officers for a special internal affairs unit. They will investigate problems of contraband and violence in prison while working as regular officers. Whom would you recruit and how would you structure the process of training? What would be the content of training? What problems with the socialization process do you anticipate?

The types of power used by a law enforcement organization can affect to what extent officers will comply with organizational rules and regulations. The paramilitary power associated with traditional police structures can contribute to a counter-force and subculture that creates noncompliance with formal organizational goals and can lead to high turn-over rates. After reviewing the assignments, module notes, PowerPoint presentations, and articles in the Learning & Assessment Activities page, you will have a better understanding of how nonconventional power structures can lead to noncompliance issues. For this discussion, address the following question: • What types of power are criminal justice employees most likely to consider legitimate? Explain why as an organization is “legitimized” by subordinates, it gains compliance from them.
