Answer

The reading addresses the issue of learning strategies for students with intellectual disabilities. Instructional organization and effective instructional delivery are described as the key contributors to effective learning for students with intellectual disabilities. Teachers have two basic assumptions that govern teaching. The first assumption is that procedures that lead to success for typically developing students may not work in the case of their intellectually disabled counterparts. Differences in learning characteristics exhibited by these two groups have a significant role to play in this phenomenon. The second one is that instructional progress can only be achieved if the instruction is delivered directly. Students with learning disabilities require a functional and objective curriculum that promotes practical participation in all classroom activities.

Moreover, the article explains the defining characteristics of students with mental retardation. These students are primarily characterized by short-term memory and a poor ability to recount events or subjects. Despite this challenge, it is still possible for them to learn effectively. According to the essay, the best strategy instructors can apply is the use of distributed practice and concrete examples. The goal is to transfer knowledge in a systematic and progressive manner. They should focus on transitioning gradually from a simple focal point to more complex and diverse ideas (Foreman, 2009).

Furthermore, the reading highlights content and setting as crucial components of education for students with learning disabilities. Other than imparting academic skills, education also serves to mold one’s character by teaching independent living, community, communication, and social interaction skills. These students also need to acquire these skills as a way of encouraging them to become responsible people. The setting is important during learning because it affects mood and alertness, therefore it needs to be functional for maximum learning (Wehmeyer, 2005). According to the reading, individual goal planning and diagnostic/prescriptive/ evaluative (DPE) teaching can also contribute to the accomplishment of great results for students with intellectual disabilities. This technique considers each student’s individual abilities and is useful in the establishment of a highly adaptable and personalized approach to learning.

As an experienced teacher, I might apply this content to a classroom by ensuring that the individual learning needs of each student with intellectual disabilities are being met at all times. I would also change my mode of learning to focus exclusively on concrete examples rather than abstract concepts. Lastly, I might the ideas presented in this reading by focusing on both academic skills and character development.
