Learning strategies for students with intellectual disabilities
The reading addresses the issue of learning strategies for students with intellectual disabilities. Instructional organization and effective instructional delivery are described as the key contributors to effective learning for students with intellectual disabilities. Teachers have two basic assumptions that govern teaching. The first assumption is that procedures that lead to success for typically developing students may not work in the case of their intellectually disabled counterparts. Differences in learning characteristics exhibited by these two groups have a significant role to play in this phenomenon. The second one is that instructional progress can only be achieved if the instruction is delivered directly. Students with learning disabilities require a functional and objective curriculum that promotes practical participation in all classroom activities.
Moreover, the article explains the defining characteristics of students with mental retardation. These students are primarily characterized by short-term memory and a poor ability to recount events or subjects. Despite this challenge, it is still possible for them to learn effectively.
