Does Language Diversity Matter? Opportunities and Challenges in Preserving Languages

In declaring 2008 the International Year of Languages, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura stated, “Languages are indeed essential to the identity of groups and individuals and to their peaceful coexistence. They constitute a strategic factor of progress towards sustainable development and a harmonious relationship between the global and the local context.”
Languages are an important part of our existence and yet, many are increasingly under threat. Studies show that by the end of this century, over 6000 languages spoken today will have disappeared. Why do languages matter? Why should we care about preserving languages in our globalized world?

Building on the knowledge you acquired in Unit 2, write a three-part reflective response on:

1. Global dimension: Which countries have taken successful measures at language preservation or saving a threatened or “endangered” language? Provide at least two examples.
2. National dimension: What is the UAE doing about preserving Arabic? What are the remaining challenges and creative solutions you can think of?
3. Self-reflection: How does this relate to you individually? How will you preserve your language? Does it matter?
I also uploaded the readings of Unit 2 that will be useful. The part about languages is from page 150 till 181.
