Answer

Response Essay

The film, Rabbit-Proof Fence, talks about three Aborigine children that are separated from their families and forced into an Aboriginal integration program. The program is an attempt to change real indigenous aborigines to accept the common Australian culture that has been influenced by the white people hence considered the ideal culture. The three main characters, however, escape from the school settlement to return to their families and live a life of their own choice (Noyce, n.p.). The film is related to the course because it touches on the rights of the Aborigine people. The system implemented by the government of Australia where the Aborigine children are taken forcefully from their families to settlement schools in order to make them more Australian is an abuse of human rights.

The government of Australia packages the program as very helpful to the small indigenous cultures but the children who go through the system consider it as not beneficial in any circumstance. The young children are subjected to racism, kidnapping, and forced education against their will and the will of their families. In the course, the children who go through the forced education are considered as “The Stolen Generation” since they are forcefully removed from their families and culture and taken through a system of culture that is meant to strip them off their indigenous culture. The film thus helps to portray the conflict between tradition and modernity in the context of the Aborigine community from Australia. The portrayal of the abuse of the rights of the Aborigine people in the film is also captured in the course content under Part III that focuses on the comparison between modernity and tradition. The part of the course focuses on the indigenous human rights.
